Bio

Mateusz Chatys is a Research Associate at the Centre for Asian Affairs at the University of Lodz, Poland. He holds a PhD in political science and wrote his thesis on the patron-client concept in China's relations with Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. His research interests include the United States-China competition in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on the South China Sea dispute, especially from the perspective of the Philippines.

The East Asia Forum office is based in Australia and EAF acknowledges the First Peoples of this land — in Canberra the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people — and recognises their continuous connection to culture, community and Country.
